Thankfully, success also triggers a boost in serotonin—a mood-stabilizing, "feel-good" neurotransmitter—especially when others recognize and celebrate our achievements. But what about the moments when we face failure? How do we keep moving forward after a setback?

Meet oxytocin: a powerful hormone best known for triggering the "let-down" response during breastfeeding. But its role goes far beyond that. Oxytocin is also deeply tied to feelings of love, connection, and positive emotions. When you overcome challenges and achieve success with a group, your body releases a surge of oxytocin. This helps counteract the natural decline of dopamine that happens over time. Interestingly, even in failure, as long as you're part of a group, you'll still experience that oxytocin boost. The sense of camaraderie and belonging can ignite positivity and keep you going when your personal motivation starts to falter. This is exactly why group fitness classes and team competitions are so powerful. Training partners not only push you to perform better, but the bonds you build together can help you stay resilient, even in the face of setbacks. Beyond social connections, oxytocin also plays a vital role in stress relief and emotional regulation. When released, it helps to lower cortisol levels in the body, effectively reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm. Studies have shown that oxytocin can even help speed up physical healing by reducing inflammation and encouraging cell regeneration.
